A 3/4 leather  bound, early American edition, of what is considered to be the definitive English-language edition of the Koran [Qur’an]. Illustrated with five engraved plates, including a folding map of Arabia, views of the Temple of Mecca, and genealogical tables of the Tribes of the Genuine and Naturalized Arabs


Original binding, measuring 9 1/4 by 6 1/4 inches (large octavo), calf spine, with raised bands, double ruled in blind , maroon morocco spine label stamped in gilt ("SALE’S KORAN"), marbled paper-covered boards, leather corners , pp. xx, 670, [5] plates (four folding plates, each measuring 9 by 11 inches, and one single-page plate).


Illustrated with five wonderful, richly detailed, engraved plates:
I: A Genealogical Table of the Tribes of the Genuine Arabs (9 by 11 inch folding plate)
II: A Genealogical Table of the Tribes of the Naturalized Arabs being Descendants of Ismael the son of Abraham by a Daughter of Modat the Iorhamite (9 by 11 inch folding plate)
III: The Tribe of Koreish (Single-page Plate)
IV: [Folding Engraved Map of]: ARABIA. [inset] The Temple of Mecca (9 by 11 inch folding plate)

Slightly rubbed at tips of spine, leather a bit worn at very tips of corners, faint tanning to front and rear endpapers, else a fine, bright copy. The binding is in very good  condition and the text and plates are absolutely pristine. No previous owner’s marks.
